2018/19 essay question analysis
This is similar to what other schools ask for, and should be something you have already locked in through your brainstorming.
One caution; there is sometimes a tendency to give equal time to both short and long-term goals. However, if your long-term goal is differentiated (expanding adoption of data analytics within the restaurant industry and increasing the availability of prosthetic limbs are some of our favorites from the past year), then focus more space on that. After all, the key to a successful essay is to inspire the reader and differentiate yourself from other applicants.
That being said, ensure you devote time to explaining your short-term goals. Make sure it relates to your long-term goals in terms of skills or relationships being built, otherwise it risks coming across as lack of commitment to your longer-run goal. That will help you stand out from a crowded field.
Questions about passion are some of our favorite, as it offers the opportunity to showcase your skills and experiences that may not come through in other parts of the application. There is a tight word limit here, so you will have to dive into your example or story right away.
Nevertheless, have fun with this topic. Think about where you spend your time outside of work; consider that as the main topic. Like to fly? That can demonstrate your attention to detail and how you remain cool under pressure. Volunteer with those less fortunate? That demonstrates how you build empathy and bridges with diverse groups of people. Whatever your passion, try to highlight skills you use pursuing this passion to professional success and your longer-term goal.
The optional question is available for you to explain any additional information that you may not have had the space to clarify in other parts of your application.
