HBS Class of 2018 Essay Analysis

May 15, 2015

HBS’s question was released this morning. It is no longer optional, however, you do have a lot of discretion about how you answer the question!

2015/16 essay questions

Essay 1:

It's the first day of class at HBS. You are in Aldrich Hall meeting your "section." This is the group of 90 classmates who will become your close companions in the first-year MBA classroom. Our signature case method participant-based learning model ensures that you will get to know each other very well. The bonds you collectively create throughout this shared experience will be lasting.

Introduce yourself.

2015/16 essay question analysis

As HBS mentions in their post about the question, it is very direct this year! It’s an opportunity to help others get to know you.

So how should you approach this? We would encourage you to write something that you’d feel comfortable reading out loud to a peer. Do you get their attention? Is it short enough to keep their attention for the duration? Does it really represent you?

As with most essay questions, the best way to start is by truly getting to know yourself, both through your own reflection and engaging others. We love helping people through that process, from the detailed brainstorming and assessments to feedback exercises from others.

Before you start brainstorming and writing, take HBS’s advice… watch the video! Not only will it help you to answer the question, it will give you a better view into the case method. To understand how you would fit at HBS, it’s essential to understand whether you would like the case method. Does it fit with your learning style or will it challenge you to think differently? Do you want to be sitting in that class? While a visit will give you the best perspective, it’s still helpful to explore more of the videos of the case method, particularly the alumni video, which appears to provide the most realistic perspective on the case method.
