Haas Class of 2021 Essay Analysis
Haas has released its 2018/19 essays, keeping its first essay the same while changing the contents of its second prompt.
Essay 1: Tell us a six-word story that reflects a memorable experience in your life-to-date. Elaborate on why it is meaningful to you. (300 words maximum)
Essay 2: Briefly describe your immediate post-MBA career goal, and discuss how it will put you on a path to a meaningful and rewarding career. (300 words maximum)
2018/19 essay question analysis
This was one of the most fun essay questions for our clients last year. When we offered our own team the opportunity to answer this, this is what followed:
Waited to marry; still in love
Took the other job; learned Bulgarian.
Before second date bought cancellation insurance.
Asked for money; got too much.
Read until I had to write.
Typing (and heart) speed: 110 WPM
Digging deep, loud shouts, huge grins!
Witnessing pure joy never gets old.
Don’t stress too much about the six words themselves; the explanation of your word choice will be more important than the words themselves. As you write, link your explanation of your word choice to your unique background and story to ensure you differentiate from other candidates. As you consider which path to pursue, look for answers that align with Haas' four key principles.
This question is similar to what other schools ask for in their own essays, and thus you may be able to borrow from what you have already written. That being said, it is slightly different in that it doesn’t ask for how an MBA will help you achieve your goals, but rather how your post-MBA career goal represents a better career path. Therefore, instead of discussing how you will use Haas to achieve your goals, focus on how your longer-run goals align with your character and what motivates you. A key insight the Admissions Committee is looking for is what you view as a rewarding and meaningful career. Finally, keep examples short and direct, with limited context, as the 300-word limit doesn’t allow for much explanation of your stories.
