Expanding Your Educational Horizons

July 09, 2013

I recently had the honor of hosting a career panel at the “Bridging Your Career with Asia” event, with participants from:

  • China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai

  • Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

  • Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad

  • Nanyang Business School (NBS) in Singapore

Together, these schools have formed Top Asian Business Schools, and organization to promote business education opportunities in Asia. It’s an interesting collaboration and one that makes it possible for each organization to reach a broader population with their message.

Many things stood out to me during the session on Sunday. First and foremost, the quality of the prospective students in the room! So many of them had broad, international experience already, spoke multiple languages and were chasing after dreams with exuberance. Stories of one-way tickets, new ventures and partnerships abounded. It was a real pleasure to meet many of them and I hope we remain connected!

Beyond the prospective students, I was struck with how differentiated the schools were and the opportunities that each could offer both Asian and non-Asian students. For example, Nanyang Business School noted the depth of its relationships in the financial services sector while also showcasing relationships with many global firms. HKUST emphasized its location as a great place to enter the Asian market and the importance of recruiting locally, noting how senior executives at global companies are increasingly being sourced out of Asian offices. Both ISB and CEIBS noted immersion opportunities for students seeking success in India and China, a message that took on special significance when the very same day, one of my clients reached out to update me on the success of a new venture he was leading in China after immersing himself in the country years ago.

The event was a useful reminder to consider many options when deciding which school might best help you reach your career goals. As I emphasized in my presentation HERE, an investment in graduate school is one of the largest investments you will ever make. If immersion in another country will drive you faster towards your career goals, going to school in a country you wish to settle in could be a great option.
